Cows – Our New Breast Friend? – Posted in: General
It doesn’t get much weirder than this: Richard Gray of the Telegraph recently reported that human genes have been introduced into 300 cows in scientists’ attempts to make give cow’s milk the same nutritious properties as human breast milk. Research director, Professor Ning Li stated that “The milk tastes stronger than normal milk. We aim to commercialize some research in this area in coming three years. For the ‘human-like milk’, 10 years or maybe more time will be required to finally pour this enhanced milk into the consumer’s cup.”
He also stated that “Human milk contains the ‘just right’ proportions of protein, carbohydrates, fats, minerals, and vitamins for an infant’s optimal growth and development,” something that he considers to be lacking in cow’s milk.
Unfortunately, the experiments by the researchers resulted in 42 transgenic calves being born, of which ten died of gastro-intestinal disease shortly after birth, and a further six died six months after birth. Only 26 survived.
Helen Wallace, director of biotechnology monitoring group GeneWatch UK, said “”There is a question about whether milk from these cows is going to be safe from humans and it is really hard to tell that unless you do large clinical trials like you would a drug, so there will be uncertainty about whether it could be harmful to some people.” For more on this, see the full article.
Here at Ahimsa, we propose that milk from cows that lead stressful lives with unethical treatment is naturally of an inferior quality. Studies have proven that cows who are taken care of in a loving environment with natural methods of care and health treatment, produce milk that has unparalleled health benefits for humans. We’re just finalising packaging for our Ahimsa milk, which we’re hoping will be available for home delivery very soon.
